Capital Transit resumes service into Downtown Juneau
The City and Borough of Juneau’s public bus system has resumed service into Downtown Juneau. Riders can once again access Capital Transit service at the Downtown Transit Center, Franklin and Front Street, and 4th Street bus stops (see the transit route map here). Capital Transit temporarily discontinued service due to construction near the Downtown Transit Center as part of the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities Egan Drive Improvements Project.

Downtown Transit Center waiting area closed until further notice.
To promote social distancing, and for the health of Juneau riders and bus operators, the Downtown Transit Center waiting area will be closed until further notice. The closure goes into effect April 8. Capital Transit understands the inconvenience this may cause, but appreciates the community’s understanding and patience.
As a reminder, Capital Transit has limited bus capacity to 9 riders and CAPITAL AKcess has limited van capacity to 2 riders. Riders should only use public transportation for essential trips, such as:

Capital Transit bus service and CAPITAL AKcess paratransit service will be free of charge starting today, March 20. At this time, regular service remains available with additional vehicle disinfecting procedures in place to help protect the community.
Riders are encouraged to only use Capital Transit if they must and, when they are on the bus, to practice social distancing. To allow the appropriate distance between the driver and passengers, the rear door of Capital Transit buses will be utilized as the main entrance and exit. To help slow, or hopefully prevent, the spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), Capital Transit has implemented a more robust cleaning/disinfecting procedures on its vehicles.
Fixed route buses will be disinfected throughout the day, approximately every hour, as the buses are on route. They will also be thoroughly cleaned inside and out daily, and the interior completely disinfected. Paratransit vans, CAPITAL AKcess, will be disinfected after rides as needed, and thoroughly cleaned daily inside and out, and the interior completely disinfected.
The addition of in-route disinfecting procedures may cause missed transfers. As events unfold in the community, the public may see changes to schedules or service hours. Capital Transit apologizes in advance for any inconvenience, but the health and safety of the community is the priority. Thank you for your patience and cooperation.

CAPITAL AKcess is the new name for Capital Transit’s paratransit service, which has been called Care-a-Van. The City and Borough of Juneau recently renewed a 5-year contract with Catholic Community Service to operate the paratransit bus service, which supplements Capital Transit’s fixed route system. CBJ is federally required to provide paratransit service and CBJ has always offered it free-of-charge to its customers.
With the new name comes new buses, which have CAPITAL AKcess displayed on the front and the Capital Transit logo on the side. The new paratransit buses will start running Thursday, February 13. They’ll continue to provide the same excellent service to residents and visitors unable to ride the fixed route system.
In addition, the phone number for scheduling rides on the CBJ paratransit service has changed. You can now call the toll-free number 844-4AK-cess (844-425-2377) to schedule a ride, report a problem, or pass along a compliment. You can also contact CAPITAL AKcess by emailing capitalakcess@juneau.org. If you’re calling after hours, please leave a message. If you want to report a problem or pass along a compliment, you can also call the Capital Transit Contract Administrator at 789-6901, but they cannot schedule rides for you there.
